11 best men's backpacks perfect for both a weekend getaway and the morning commute
A good backpack is a friend for life, so it’s worth investing a little extra time when choosing the right one. You’ll want a backpack that you can wear for several hours if necessary, especially if you plan on taking it abroad.
The following backpacks have been chosen with the following criteria in mind: comfort, storage, style and practicality. So read on for a mix of classic, streetwear and all weather options to suit a range of budgets.
Peter Werth nason nylon rucksack:
This back pack shows that style needn’t cost an arm and a leg. The sleek black canvas not only looks great, it’s easy to clean and the thin straps are surprisingly comfortable. There’s plenty of space inside to suit most needs, however it wouldn’t be suitable for anything longer than a weekend getaway. There’s a separate compartment for laptops and notebooks which is always a nice touch. The main compartment is secured with a magnetic latch which, although not the most secure, is actually very convenient for quickly retrieving your belongings. All in all this great little number from London designer Peter Werth is much better than its modest price tag suggests, marrying major style with some nice practical touches.
Fjallraven kanken camo:
This Swedish brand has become synonymous with laid back style over the last few years. This classic kanken backpack is eternally popular for a reason. Well-made and sturdy, it’s great for commuting or weekend city breaks, comfortable to wear and with a surprising amount of space. The zips extends the full length of the bag so you can squeeze and retrieve your belongings with relative ease. After a while the bag starts to feel like it’s been moulded for your body. The kanken comes in a huge range of colourways but this multicoloured camo number stands out from the rest.
Rains ltd. mountaineer bag:
Rains has emerged as one of the coolest outerwear brands on the planet thanks to its hip minimal Danish design and quality. Fully waterproof, the mountaineer bag is suitable for the more active commuter. It’s lined with a highly reflective material that will benefit cyclists, especially after dark, while the cushioned shoulder and adjustable chest straps mean you hardly notice you’re wearing it. There’s oodles of space inside for storing two or three days worth of clothes and a separate compartment for laptops 13” or smaller. A handy side netting lets you easily store drinks containers. The limited edition neon green colourway is sure to stand out amid a sea of muted tones on the high street.
Reiss bronnman backpack:
Reiss is a high street brand well loved by those with a more classic sense of style. The bronnman backpack is no different and was clearly designed with care. There’s a fine attention to detail from the leather trim to the rugged technical nylon canvas. The sleek silhouette will suit most outfits, as will the classic navy colourway. There’s both a zip and slip pocket inside the main compartment and ample space to store 13” or smaller laptops along with enough clothes for a long weekend getaway.
Sandqvist stig backpack:
Sandqvist is one of the pioneering brands that brought Scandinavian fashion to the masses. Obsessed with sustainability, Sandqvist even offers to collect old products and give them a new lease of life. So should you choose to purchase the stig backpack, made from organic cotton sourced directly from the farmers, you can rest assured knowing that it will find a new home when you’re done with it. With only one compartment it’s a little less practical than some of the other backpacks on this list, but can easily fit laptops 13” or smaller and has an inner zip pocket for keeping valuables extra safe.
Canvas steamer backpack:
The canvas steamer is a beautifully constructed backpack with a durable water resistant cotton canvas and leather lid. Like all Cambridge Satchel Company products, the materials are sourced from within the UK. This backpack is great for those with a more scholarly style and the leather ages gorgeously giving this product lots of character. It’s surprisingly light and has ample room for everyday use. The buckles used to fasten the main compartment look fantastic with the leather detailing, however they’re not the most practical when it comes to quickly getting in to reach for your belongings.
Carhartt WIP military rucksack:
Carhartt is loved by skaters and streetwear enthusiasts alike. Originally a brand synonymous with blue collar American workers, Carhartt specialised in denim. While they still make great jeans, they also make mean backpacks with the DNA of the brand’s original no-nonsense ethos. The heavy duty military rucksack is very comfortable and boasts loads of storage thanks to three sizeable pockets on the front, taking inspiration from the armed forces. There are other options but the bright orange and black colourway stands out as a fresh alternative to the other more muted tones.
NYLON 6 OR NYLON 66
July 28, 2019 hashim
NYLON 6 OR NYLON 66 - WHICH ONE SHOULD I CHOOSE?
Nylon (PA) 6 & 66 are both synthetic polymers called polyamides, with the numbers describing the type and quantity of polymer chains in their chemical structure. Most nylons, including 6 & 66, are semi-crystalline and possess good strength and durability for demanding applications.
Nylon Properties
As polyamides, Nylon 6 & 66, whilst having their own separate and distinct benefits, do share many of the same core properties:
- High mechanical strength, stiffness, hardness and toughness.
- Good fatigue resistance.
- High mechanical damping ability.
- Good sliding properties.
- Excellent wear resistance
- Good electrical insulating properties
- Good resistance to high energy radiation (gamma & x-ray).
- Good machinability.
An important difference between Nylon 6 & 66 is mold shrinkage. Nylon 6’s lower mold shrinkage adds reliability to final part dimensions which is beneficial whilst Nylon 66’s greater mold shrinkage, as it is exposed to cool air and solidifies, means the material’s shape changes more after processing, which must be accounted for.
Other key differences between the two nylons are water absorption rates and heat deflection temperatures. As Nylon 6 absorbs more water than Nylon 66 and has lower heat deflection temperatures, it is not suited to applications that are exposed to water at high temperatures. Nylon 66 would be a better choice between the two.
- Sleeve and slide bearings
- Wear pads
- Support and guide wheels
- Cable sheaves
- Hammer heads
- Scrapers
- Gear wheels
- Seal rings
- Cutting boards
- Track plates
Which One Should I Choose?
The needs of an application have to be considered in terms of processing, aesthetic appearance, and mechanical properties first, in order to decide whether Nylon 6 or 66 is more suitable.
Nylon 6 should be used if a lightweight engineering plastic is required to withstand high impact and stress. It has better aesthetic appearance than Nylon 66 due to its lustrous finish and is easier to dye. It is an ideal choice for applications in the automotive, industrial and military industries. Common applications include: gears, firearm components and automotive engine compartments. It is not ideal, however, for applications that are exposed to water at high temperatures due to its higher water absorption and lower heat deflection rate than Nylon 66, which would be a better choice.
Nylon 66 should be used if a high performing engineering plastic is required that will be exposed to higher temperatures. Additionally, its stiffness and good tensile and flexural modulus make it an ideal material for applications that need repeated long-term performance. Typical applications include: friction bearings, radiator caps and tire ropes.

How to choose the perfect rucksack

How to choose the perfect rucksack
It may seem superficial, considering all of the magic that travel entails; however, selecting the right bag (or in this case, rucksack), can make or break a getaway. It’s one of the first things you do, and one of the most important – a travel bag can either perfectly complement your trip or seriously hinder you from enjoying it.
Whether you’re planning a gap-year in Southeast Asia or planning a long, vigorous hike through a renowned forest trail, let’s go over what you need to consider when choosing the right rucksack.
Five steps to the perfect rucksack:
1. Comfort comes first
As it would be with shoes, the fit has to be right. The best way to test this, of course, is to either purchase it in-store or online at a reputable retailer with a forgiving return policy. Either way, before pulling the trigger, you have to make sure the bag feels and fits appropriately because it could make the difference between exploring a place happily… or miserably.
2. Size does matter
Take it from people who have lugged around huge backpacks for months and months at a time. If your backpack or rucksack is larger than it needs to be, it may lead to you overpacking – something your back is not going to be too happy about. Here are a few guidelines to keep in mind.
At one extreme, there are 70-liter rucksacks: this is the largest size that only people in extreme use cases should purchase.
The ideal size rucksack for the vast majority of people is 60 liters. Young ladies can go with 50- or 55-liter rucksacks, while men can somewhat comfortably size up to 60 or 65 liters if necessary.
3. Convenient straps
Generally speaking, a good rucksack will incorporate adequately-designed weight-bearing straps to help transform your overwhelming bag into a genuinely accommodating rucksack.
The whole goal of the rucksack is to take the load off of your shoulders and place more of it onto your hips: equal distribution of weight is fundamentally better for you, as it will allow you to hike, climb, and move around much more easily. These days, many of the larger rucksacks also incorporate hip belts as a standard.
All in all, sturdy shoulder straps are vital and ought to be comfortable (i.e., have plenty of padding).
4. Pockets, pockets, and more pockets
One of the best reasons for picking a rucksack as a travel bag is the insanely useful amount of pockets they typically have. There’s nothing worse than having to open your entire bag every single time you want to access something.
That’s not a problem you’ll likely have to worry about with rucksacks.
Rucksacks and their generous pockets allow you to allocate certain sections throughout the day much more efficiently (e.g., when you need to access toiletries, cash, garments, passport/documentation, etc.). The best rucksack pocket design is a U-Shaped opening pocket, as it’ll allow you easy access.
5. Rucksacks for the fast-paced
Certain rucksacks are designed to be as small, light, and as form-fitting possible. Their small size and capacity only permit you to store a few essentials: phone, food, water, etc. – but they are much better suited to individuals who value mobility and comfort above all else.
5b. If you can, go for additional features!
So you’ve determined all of the rucksack characteristics that sound perfect for you and your journey. If you can swing it, don’t skimp on the features! They may keep your bag from falling apart or getting soaked mid-trip, as is the case with specific materials, or help you to store things more c
What is a Rucksack Bag

What is a Rucksack Bag? (And Why It’s Perfect for Travel!)
Whether you are planning a vacation for a week, a month, or maybe even a full year, one of the most important pieces of gear is the bag that accompanies you through your adventure: a travel bag that will safely and comfortably store your belongings. There’s just one question that confuses everyone who comes across it – what is a rucksack bag? And, how does it differ from a backpack?First, a rucksack “bag” is just a rucksack: the word “bag” ends up being redundant. Second, and most importantly, a rucksack is actually a sort of backpack! Many people use the terms interchangeably, and the most obvious differentiating factor between a rucksack and a backpack is the size. A backpack is typically smaller than a rucksack.
There’s much more to it than that, however, so let’s explore a few of the critical differences between the two and how to choose the right rucksack.
Common characteristics of a backpack:
- Lightweight and smaller in comparison to a rucksack
- Typically has a side-pocket for carrying a water bottle
- Will often redirect the load to cushioned hip belts
Common characteristics of a rucksack:
- Contains a sizeable primary compartment that is reachable from the top – expect to cinch or tie this opening to close it
- Small pockets on the outside
- Belts and loops for holding things like containers and sleeping bags
Why is a rucksack the best option for you?
Before we tell you why you should choose a rucksack, let’s quickly look at the source of the word. The word “rucksack” has a German origin, where “rucken ” signifies “back” in German, and “sack” signifies “bag.” Literally, this means it translates to a sack for your back – taken less directly, we can see it as a bag for travels.
Three reasons to choose a rucksack
1. Easy on your feet
With a rucksack, you’ll be able to venture off and explore off-the-beaten paths and ledges with relative ease. This is because with rucksacks, given that they were meant to carry heavier loads, the weight will be better distributed. Furthermore, this better weight distribution will allow you to travel through cities more effectively.
Depending on the size of your rucksack, you may also come off as less obtrusive as you wander through cities, making you less of a target for crooks.
2. Perfect for frequent travelers
Frequent traveler and globe trotters need something that can stand the test of time and the realities of travel. Bags that can offer something in the style department – but mostly just a bag that can take beatings while holding plenty of things. That, in essence, is a rucksack: sturdiness, pockets, and protective of prying hands.
3. Budget-friendly
Packing things properly into a compressed rucksack can save you quite a lot on baggage fees! With a little bit of minimalism and a modestly-sized rucksack, you can bring the bag onboard with you as a carry-on and avoid paying for luggage.
Nylon vs. Polyester Backpack
July 25, 2019 hashim
The Crucial Differences You Need to Know
Backpackers often wonder which material is best – whether to go with nylon or polyester. In short, the nylon vs. polyester backpack discussion is moot: either backpack would suit your needs, no matter what you choose to carry inside or the kind of environment you want to use it in.
While nylon is a much stronger fabric than polyester, polyester is more stain-resistant and easy to clean. Additionally, polyester is more water-resistant and dries faster than nylon after washing.
When comparing these materials, some of the attributes you need to look at include durability, ease-of-care, shrink-resistance, flexibility, and resistance to wrinkling. Below are some of the properties of nylon vs. polyester that you should consider before choosing your travel backpack.
Why choose Nylon?
Nylon is an artificial polymer, also known as thermoplastic, and typically comes from petroleum. Travelers commonly use nylon as a fabric due to its smoothness, minimal weight, and very durable nature.
Moreover, being a flexible fiber, it can be modified into any shape or design by merely adding a delustering agent to it during the molten stage of manufacturing.
Nylon Pros:
- Elasticity
- Low absorbency rate
- Easy to clean and wash
- Mildew resistant
- Strength and resilience
- Drapability
Nylon Cons:
- Retains heat
- Easily destroyed by bleach
- High affinity to dyes

Travel Backpack

The Best Travel Backpack
First, the Deuter Traveler 60 + 10 backpack is a front-loading travel backpack. This means that it has a large, U-shaped zipper that wraps around the entire front panel (see below). This allows the backpack to open like a suitcase and you can easily see everything inside. In my opinion, front-loading packs are far superior to their top-loading counterparts, which force you to blindly dig deep into the depths of your bag to find little objects that have sunk to the bottom. As well, I’ve noticed that most front-loading packs are more secure than the top-loading backs that fasten with a drawstring (especially when you use a tiny luggage lock or mini carabiners to secure your zippers!).
Second, the Deuter Traveler 60 + 10 is ergonomically designed for women’s bodies. Unisex backpacks, and backpacks designed for men, often don’t fit women properly through the waist, hips and shoulders. For most women who are 5’8″ and below, a travel backpack designed for women will usually be the best fit. As
you can see below, the hip belt is slightly curved to fit someone with a narrower waist and wider hips, and the shoulder straps are a little bit less wide than you’d see on a typical unisex backpack. Of course, all of the straps are fully adjustable to fit your specific body shape (just remember to fill your pack before your start making adjustments).

Third, the Deuter Traveler 60 + 10 appeals to my love of staying über-organized while traveling. By my count (and I might have missed something), this travel backpack has six different compartments: the main, front-loading compartment, a separate bottom section (ideal for shoes and toiletries), three interior mesh compartments (I reserve one just for pads and tampons!) and one hidden zippered section on the front of the bag (this flat compartment is where I shove receipts after I check out from my hotel). Similarly, the entire back of the bag can be hidden inside a zippered compartment, so you can safely hide the straps away when you check your bag on an airplane or bus.

9 Tips To Buy A Quality Backpack
July 21, 2019 hashim
How to buy the perfect backpack for your needs?
These 9 tips will ensure all your bases are covered and ensure you make a smart purchase
Backpack Buying Tip #1 – Comfort
Comfort is by far the most important factor in choosing a backpack. If it hurts your back, you're at best not going to use it often. At worst – you could injure yourself.
- Adjustable and padded shoulder straps ensure the backpack sits comfortably, reducing the strain on your back.
- Contoured and padded backs follow the natural shape of your lower back adding to the comfort of carrying the bag. The shape allows for a natural arch to ensure no back pain.
- Padded hip belts remove weight from the back and shoulders and places a larger portion of the burden on the leg muscles – allowing you to carry heavier loads for longer.
Backpack Buying Tip #2 – Durability
Heavy-duty backpacks are generally made of ultra-strong nylon material and YKK-grade zippers and straps of nylon. Nylon and polyester are the most popular pack materials. Heavier fabrics like canvas also make durable bags that you will be using for years. Even leather works, although it can drive up the price of a bag.
The most common reasons men throw their old backpacks aside is tears on the shoulder straps, broken zippers and stitching that has come undone.
The shoulders straps are most susceptible to tears. Observe the sewing and thread material. Double stitching is preferred. Avoid carrying loads that the bag is not designed to handle. A seamstress can easily fix these tears for as little as $10.
Backpack Buying Tip #3 – Content Protection
Your backpack needs to be somewhat waterproof and requires padding to protect electronic or delicate equipment.
- Water resistant material – You may not need a 100% waterproof backpack – but a bag made from semi-waterproof materials is going to protect the contents in an emergency situation. Bags made from nylon and polyester are better options for outdoor adventures and backpacking trips.
- Padding – A padded compartment for laptops and tablets are common in backpacks. Ensure they are securely fastened to avoid your electronic equipment from jostling around in your bag.
Finding the perfect size backpack is a matter of selecting one that is proportional to your body and that fits all the items you need to carry.
The right fit is a size appropriate for your torso length and one that has a comfortably snug grip on your hips.
- Torso length – Some packs are available in multiple sizes, from extra small to large, which fit a range of torso lengths.
- Hip size – The majority of a backpack’s weight should be supported by your hips. Adjustable backpack hipbelts accommodate a wide range of hip sizes.
To measure your torso length – stand with your hand on your hip bones, index finger pointing straight and thumbs in back. The length of your torso is measured from the bony bump at the base of your neck to the middle of your back where your thumbs meet.
- Extra small & small backpacks fit torsos up to 18″.
- Medium & regular backpacks fit 18″ – 20″ torsos.
- Large backpacks fit torsos 20″ and above.
Backpack Buying Tip #5 – Your Activity Needs
The choice between daypacks, rucksacks, travel bags and minimalist backpacks can leave any shopper confused.
Apart from getting the size right, the design and build of the bag should suit your purposes.
- Are you confident the backpack will fit all the utilities you need to carry?
- Will you be walking and moving around from one place to another or will you be sitting in a classroom for most of the day?
- What type of weather are you most likely to encounter while wearing the backpack?
You need something that is suitable for your activities.
If you are planning to use the backpack mainly for short hikes or college – a canvas backpack is ideal. If your main mode of transport is a bicycle, a water-proof nylon backpack is necessary.
A versatile backpack is suitable for any kind of class load – whether you’re packing a camera with lenses, 700-page textbooks, 15 inch laptop, a change of gym clothes or all of these and some more.
Backpack Buying Tip #6 –Material
Match your needs with a backpack made from the right materials to ensure that it stays intact for years.
The commonly used backpack materials are…
- Cotton Canvas – Canvas is a heavy-weight, rough weave cotton material. Modern canvas is made from natural and synthetic materials – reducing weight and increasing waterproof capabilities and strength. Its main advantage is that it is an inexpensivematerial. Canvas packs are popular with college students and hikers.
- Pack-Cloth Nylon backpacks are shiny and slick to the touch. The main advantages of pack cloth nylon are it's ready acceptance of waterproof coating, abrasion resistance, and excellent puncture resistance.
- Cordura – an “air treated” nylon fabric originally designed by DuPont. The chief advantages of Cordura fabric are its abrasion resistance and light weight. Used in higher end backpacks which are perfect for backpacking adventures.
- Rip-stop Nylon – The “rip-stopping” design of rip-stop nylon can provide extra protection to help ensure that your pack won't disintegrate in front of your eyes the first ten miles into an adventurous hike. The main advantages of rip-stop nylon are it's excellent waterproofing and lightness in weight.
- Polyester has a higher resistance to ultra-violet (UV) degradation than nylon but it is not the most rugged material for a backpack. However, it is strong and tough enough for little kids. Backpacks made of polyester are affordable, hold color well (meaning they can be very vibrant in color).
- Leather backpacks are a stylish, although expensive alternative to the standard backpack. Full grain, vegetable-tanned leather is generally used for backpacks. This material develops a unique patina over time and gives the bags an organic quality. Leather backpacks are perfect for use in the workplace as they are usually the most formal style of backpack
Backpack Buying Tip #7 –Organization
Some backpacks are bare on the inside. Some are highly organized with multiple pockets and compartments.
You might prefer a minimalist approach for a lighter load backpack or one with multiple compartments to store and easily access your utilities. The more compartments and pockets in a backpack – the better the distribution and accessibility of your items.
- Multiple Compartments – allow for the contents of the bag to be organized in smaller sections for easier access.
- Elasticized side pockets: These pockets lie flat when empty but stretch to hold a water bottle and other loose items.
- Front pocket: Sometimes added to the exterior of a shovel pocket, these can hold smaller, less bulky items.
Organize yourself so you only carry what you need in the backpack.
Backpack Buying Tip #8 – Budget
The price of a backpack should be reflected in the quality of the materials used, the craftsmanship and the aesthetics of the design.
Some basic backpacks can cost less than $30, while higher end backpacks made from leather could easily retail for $1500. A mid-rangebackpack should cost between $50-$100.
Backpack prices depend a lot on size, fabric, and brand. Store brands are cheaper than big name brands like North Face, Osprey, and Gregory.
Backpack Buying Tip #9 – Style
Do you want to be the recipient of bag envy? Your choice might be determined first by the design of the backpack.
A backpack for the discerning man should balance practicality and sophistication on equal terms. It should be expertly crafted so that whether you're wearing it to the gym or on the daily commute – it should harmoniously blend into your overall look.
A leather backpack is the most stylish option – nylon would be the least although ballistic nylon in black is a decent option for the man on a budget.
